Lunchroom Ladies Brownies (50-Year-Old Recipe)

Tip: These decadent brownies have approximately 250-300 calories per serving, depending on portion size. They’re perfect for a school or family gathering, or when you’re craving something rich and chocolatey. Serve them with a glass of milk for a nostalgic treat!

Ingredients:
For the Brownies:

1 cup butter

½ cup cocoa

2 cups flour

2 cups sugar

4 eggs

4 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

For the Icing:

¼ cup softened butter

¼ cup canned milk (regular milk is fine)

¼ cup cocoa

3 cups powdered sugar

Dash of salt

Instructions:
Prepare the Brownie Batter:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a large bowl, mix together the butter, cocoa, flour, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.

Stir in the chopped nuts if using.

Bake the Brownies:

Pour the brownie batter into a greased 9x13-inch baking pan.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, checking at 20 minutes. Insert a toothpick into the center to ensure the brownies are done (it should come out clean).

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.

Prepare the Icing:

In a saucepan, combine the softened butter, canned milk, and cocoa.

Heat over medium heat, stirring until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth.

Stir in the powdered sugar and a dash of salt, mixing until smooth.

Frost the Brownies:

Once the brownies are cooled, spread the icing evenly over the top.

Allow the frosting to set before cutting into squares.

Notes:
Saving Energy: This recipe bakes in a 9x13 pan, which makes it relatively quick and energy-efficient. You can also use a convection oven to reduce cooking time slightly.

Health Benefits: While delicious, these brownies are indulgent and high in sugar and fat. The nuts provide some protein and healthy fats, but it’s best to enjoy these as a treat on occasion!
